Training Considerations - Why this method do works !

Bike Technique, July 16, 2016

I know sometimes it's hard to understand or to believe that the training you do really works. So on this email I want to give you just a couple of examples (of many) of the effectiveness of this training method and the ability of performing on fatigued legs. We have spent sometime teaching our brain how to be efficient when our body are fatigued - That's the key for a great performance!

Email sent to my athletes...

Professional triathlete Jozsef Major, just sent me and email about the Hungarian Duathlon Championship he won ONLY a week after IM Utah and 2 1/2 days of travelling back to Hungary :

"Hi Sergio,

How are you? I'm fine, we arrived to Hungary last Wednesday. Against all the discussions and good sense... I competed the Hungarian Duathlon Championship on Saturday.

When I finished in St George I said there was no way to race a week later. But Lucy wanted to race so we went there. I wrote the race organizers that I couldn’t participate this year so they could give the #1 bib number to someone else. I got a fast reply: „Jozsef, it doesn’t matter if you compete or not, this number just waits for you!” So I took my P4 with me in case…
In the race morning I still wasn’t sure if I would start. I knew it was not a good idea right after the Ironman and a 2 x 1 day trip (from St George to AZ and Hungary). But at least, I just couldn’t keep away from the Champs. This was one of my favourite hilly course in Hungary and I had the chance to compete as a reigning champion.
In the first 10K I felt my legs were tired (a little bit). I got into the T1 in the 4th position with „only” a 33:52 min. But on the bike I felt very good, my P4 and me were together like never before and there were no question about who was the strongest that day. I got into the T2 with a 2 min lead and I won the Hungarian Duathlon Championship again."

Also last Friday, I had a similar experience myself. I did a 90 min. hilly run in the morning, 2 hours later I was doing our usual Heavy Weight Training. IMMEDIATELY after my Weight Training session, I did a 10 min. easy warm up and participated at the Indoor Triathlon where we run 3 miles on a 190yds track (27 laps!!!) and I had my BEST run of the season with 17:58!

So, like Jozsef described above, our legs were tired, but due to the efficiency and fatigue leg training, we could still perform well. This for sure give us confidence for any race as we well know that some days we don't feel great but deep inside, you know you will perform well anyway!

Have a great weekend and STAY CONSISTENT, key to perform well !!!
